Guides that hold the whole subject in the download.

NovaHarbor builds small Android apps with nothing behind them: no account, no connection, no adverts, nothing to buy. The current one is Hellenika, a guide to the Greek city-states and the very different answers they gave to the same questions.

THE STUDIO

Two ways to build a history app

THE USUAL WAY

Fetch the articles from a server so the library can be "expanded". Ask for an account so the bookmarks can be "synced". Add a weekly notification, because retention is measured in returns. Put the second half of the material behind a subscription and call the first half a free trial.

Every one of those decisions is about the business, and each one makes the app slightly worse at the only thing it was for: being read.

WHAT HELLENIKA DOES

Ships whole. Every entry, both language versions, the images, the search index and the matching game are compiled into the download, so the app opens the same on a train as at a desk and never asks for a connection it does not need.

There is no account, because there is nothing to attach one to; no notification, because the classical world is not urgent; and no price inside it, because nothing in it is held back.

Entries describe the ancient world as historians record it — including the parts that were brutal, and the places where the sources are partisan, thin, or written centuries after the events.

HELLENIKA

The Ancient Greek City-States

Sparta and Athens were two answers to the same question: how should people live? Hellenika is a guide to that world — the rival city-states, their warriors and thinkers, their politics, warfare and daily life. Sparta, Athens, Thebes, Corinth and the rest, each with its own character: how it was governed, how it fought, what it valued, and what set it apart from its neighbours.

Alongside the guide there is a game that makes it stick: a memory matching challenge pairing each city-state with what defined it — its symbol, its institution, its famous trait — so the connections come from playing rather than memorising. Browse by topic, search for anything, and bookmark what interests you.

The strangest institution they had

Not a city-state page and not a quiz — one piece of arithmetic that the app's entries describe and this bench lets you check. Classical Athens filled most public offices, and its Council of Five Hundred, by lot rather than by election. Draw a council here and watch what randomness does to its composition.

One institution, one histogram, no cities named and nothing to match — this bench cannot tell you what Sparta valued or how Thebes was run. Hellenika is the part that can, in English and Slovenian, entirely on your handset.
